Achieve that New Year’s Resolution…Golf your way to 10,000 steps a day!
There is no question that there are tremendous health benefits to increasing your movement through activities like walking. Most of us could benefit from getting up and walking around a little more throughout the day.
We’ve all heard about the theory of walking 10,000 steps per day, along with eating a healthy diet, to help maintain cardiovascular fitness and effectively control weight. Did you know that a game of golf is an ideal way to achieve your targeted 10,000 steps?
Of course, there are different ways to walk a golf course, and taking a cart will mean that you walk less. However, studies indicate that regardless of handicap level, sex, or course played, the average number of steps that adults take walking an 18-hole round of golf is between 11,000 and 13,000; and even those using carts average more than 6,000 steps! In most cases, walking 18 holes of golf will meet the recommendation to accumulate 10,000 steps per day as part of a general physical activity plan. In addition, playing golf gives you some extra benefits of exercise because you are twisting and turning your torso, engaging your core muscles. Core strength is critical to maintaining balance and stability.
