Visit Harry P. Leu House and Gardens Just an Hour Away
Harry Leu was an extremely successful owner of an industrial supply company. He and his wife Mary Ann traveled extensively and gathered seeds and small plants wherever they visited.
In 1935 they bought the farmhouse and land at 1920 North Forest Avenue and planted the various plants and seeds in the grounds around their home. In 1961 the Leus deeded the home with its grand gardens to the City of Orlando.
Now a museum, the picturesque home facing Lake Rowena is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
You can tour it on your own or in a group under the direction of a docent. The surrounding gardens bursting with colour and diversity annually draw travelers from all over the world. Covering over 50 acres the gardens include different flowers, plants, trees, herbs, and vegetables, all in various themed collections such as the Azalea collection, Bamboo collection or Tropical Stream Garden. With more than 12,000 plants on site as well as the museum, it’s best to plan for a good two hour visit.
