Best Places to Canoe Near Orlando Florida

Juniper Springs has a long history in the Orlando area. At one time it brought hope and help to those who needed a job during the Great Depression. Today it still brings restoration and renewal as one of the best places to canoe near Orlando.

Where is Juniper Springs and Why is it Special?

Juniper Springs was one of many locations in the U.S. that benefitted from President Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corp employment project to get citizens back to work and to promote conservation.

Today it stands as one of the nation’s best places to canoe (or kayak) near two of Orlando’s top golf courses. This premier national recreational site is only 50 minutes from Mission Inn Resort and Club.

Canoeing and Kayaking at Juniper Springs

Named for the juniper trees, a species of cypress, that flourish in the area, Juniper Springs is a seven mile spring run from Juniper Springs Recreation Area to Juniper Wayside Park.

In the 1930’s workers developed the forested site and created green energy here. They channeled water from the springs through a sluice turning a waterwheel which eventually powered a millhouse. You can still see this ingenuity today while you’re traversing the stunning waterway through the ancient forest, freshwater marsh and beautiful park..p

The abundance of wildlife in the area like deer, heron, otter, raccoons, and even occasional alligators are a huge draw for visitors. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent from the concession stand daily from 8:00 to 11:30 am. The river twists and turns, so novice paddlers might find it a challenge. If you’re not paying attention to trees that are bent over, overhanging branches and submerged logs, you could experience a dunking. Canoes can make manoeuvring a lot easier.

Unwind at Historical Mission Inn Resort
