44 Years and Counting!
Through the years many loyal groups make an annual pilgrimage to Mission Inn Resort, drawn by world-class golf set on more than 1,100 scenic acres in the rolling hills of Central Florida. Perhaps one of the most loyal of these groups is a buddy golf group that is visiting again in early June – for the 44th straight year!
It all started back in 1977 when Steve Matchett and a couple of friends drove from Jacksonville to take advantage of an ad they had seen – a three-day, two-night golf getaway at Mission Inn, including meals, for $59! The trio enjoyed the experience so much that they decided to come back the following year – and every year since then! And they brought more and more friends.
The group has swelled to as many as several dozen players over the years who have traveled from as far away as Seattle to play 90 holes of golf in four days at Mission Inn in what they call the Howey Classic golf tournament. Each year they add a number to the tournament name: This year is dubbed Howey 44.
While the cost of the buddy trip has increased quite a bit since 1977, the experience of great golf and camaraderie is priceless. Matchett, now 65, plans to keep the long tradition going. He looks forward to the milestone of Howey 50!
The staff of Mission Inn Resort is happy to extend a warm welcome and a heartfelt thanks to our longtime friends!
